Planning a trip to London with children is always exciting. The city is filled with iconic landmarks, beautiful parks, charming neighbourhoods, and endless little discoveries around every corner. But when you travel as a family, the moments you remember most are rarely the perfectly planned ones. They’re the ones where your children are laughing, exploring, and simply enjoying being together.
As a London family photographer with over 13 years of experience, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing families visiting from all over the world—from tiny babies experiencing their first big trip to curious toddlers and teenagers who suddenly see the city through fresh eyes.

Start Your London Adventure at Sunrise
One of my favourite ways to explore Central London with families is to start very early in the morning. This may sound ambitious when travelling with children, but it often works beautifully—especially for families arriving from the other continents.
In fact, one of my recent sessions perfectly illustrates this.
A lovely mum from New York decided to celebrate her 40th birthday in a truly special way. Instead of a traditional party, she flew her family to London to continue a tradition she had started years earlier: celebrating life milestones with family photos in beautiful places around the world.
Her idea was simple and brilliant.
“Let’s get everyone on a plane, embrace the jet lag, wake up early, and create something we’ll treasure forever.”
And that’s exactly what we did.
We met at sunrise on Westminster Bridge, when the city was still quiet and the golden morning light wrapped around the historic buildings. The children were surprisingly energetic (thank you, jet lag!), and the atmosphere felt calm and magical.
They laughed together with Big Ben in the background, walked hand in hand through empty streets, and simply enjoyed the moment of being together in a new city. A short taxi ride took us to Covent Garden, another lovely area in Central London full of cute coffee shops and cobblestone streets ready to be explored. Nothing like a hot chocolate and a croissant to lift everyone’s spirits!
It was such a beautiful way to celebrate not only a birthday, but motherhood itself.
Turn a Photoshoot Into a Family Adventure
One of the things families often tell me afterwards is that the photoshoot didn’t feel like a photoshoot at all—it felt like a morning adventure through London.
A typical Central London session might look something like this:
Start at Westminster Bridge with views of Big Ben
Walk through Parliament Square
Explore the quiet streets around Horse Guards Parade
Take a playful break in St James’s Park
Jump into a classic black cab for a short ride
Finish near Tower Bridge and the Tower of London
Don’t forget to spoil everyone with a treat! Central London and especially Southbank has many wonderful cafes to choose from and enjoy breakfast with a view.
By the time we reach the river on the South Bank, children are usually running, playing, and enjoying the open space. Those moments of movement and laughter are where the most natural family photos happen.
Instead of asking children to pose, I simply let them lead the rhythm of the session.
Let Kids Run Free in London’s Royal Parks
London is a big city, but it’s also incredibly green. Some of my favourite family photos happen in the Royal Parks, where children can relax and be themselves.
My favourite parks for family sessions include:
Kensington Gardens
Regent’s Park
Holland Park
St James’s Park
These parks offer wide lawns, beautiful trees, winding paths, and quiet corners perfect for relaxed family moments. Kids can run, explore, chase pigeons, or cuddle up with their parents on a bench.
For toddlers especially, parks are wonderful because they allow children to burn off energy while we capture genuine smiles and connection.
Explore Charming Hidden Streets in Mayfair
Another favourite location for family sessions is the elegant neighbourhood of Mayfair.
The architecture here feels timeless and quintessentially British, with beautiful buildings, quiet streets, and the nearby greenery of Green Park.
I once photographed a family visiting London with their lively five-year-old daughter in this area. She skipped ahead of us, twirling in her dress and stopping to investigate every little detail she noticed along the way. Her curiosity made the entire session joyful and spontaneous.
Those unscripted moments created the most heartfelt photos.
Interestingly, the family loved London so much during that trip that they ended up moving here a year later.
Visit Iconic London Landmarks Kids Love
Of course, many families visiting London want to include some of the city’s famous landmarks—and children often enjoy them just as much as adults.
One location that always works beautifully for family photography is Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Tickets to Tower Bridge Museum and visiting Tower of London are A MUST.
Children love the sense of adventure here. There’s space to run along the river, boats passing by on the Thames, and dramatic historic architecture that makes the photos feel truly London.
Another hidden gem is the area around Millennium Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral, where modern city views meet historic architecture. A nearby rooftop view overlooking St Paul’s creates an incredible perspective for family photos.
Sometimes the Best Location Is the Quietest One
While London’s famous landmarks are wonderful, some of the most meaningful sessions happen in much quieter places.
Last summer, I photographed a relaxed baby session entirely in a small hotel garden.
Instead of rushing between sightseeing locations, the baby explored the grass, touched flower petals, and giggled while playing with their parents. The calm environment allowed the whole family to relax and simply enjoy being together.
These photos became some of their favourites from the trip—not because of a famous landmark, but because they captured real connection and genuine joy.
Follow the Rhythm of Your Children
Over the years I’ve photographed children of all ages—from newborn babies to teenagers—and one thing is always true:
Children set the pace.
For younger babies, I often recommend quieter locations such as parks or gardens to avoid overwhelming noise and traffic. Morning sessions usually work best when babies are rested and happy.
Energetic toddlers love open spaces where they can run freely, which is why parks work so well.
Teenagers bring a completely different energy. Exploring London with teens can be incredibly special—walking along the Thames, debating the best street food at Borough Market, or laughing together while taking selfies in front of Big Ben.
These moments are about more than sightseeing. They’re about family connection.
Creating Memories That Last Far Beyond the Trip
Photographing families at iconic locations like Big Ben or Buckingham Palace is about much more than capturing a “perfect” image.
It’s about preserving how it felt to be there together.
Years from now, when you look back at these photos, you’ll remember the laughter, the adventures, the quiet cuddles, and the joy of exploring a new city as a family.
Your children may not remember every landmark you visited, but they will remember the feeling of holding your hand as you wandered through London together.
And those are the moments I love capturing the most.
